Factors to Consider When Shopping for Surveillance Cameras

Installing surveillance cameras in your premises is a significant step towards fortifying your home. However, buying a security camera is not a simple task. You cannot buy a surveillance camera blindly.

There are various factors which you should consider when shopping for surveillance cameras. These factors range from the hardware physique of the security cameras to the reasons as to why you need them. Here are ten factors which you should consider before purchasing a security camera;

The Type

As explained by Business News Daily, there are different types of surveillance cameras. You should therefore select an appropriate camera type which can effectively suit your needs. The three types of security cameras are;

  1. Bullet Cameras

Bullet cameras are cylindrical and small. They are also not required to be kept in a protective dome. Due to their small size, they are not easily recognizable.

Therefore, bullet cameras are used in instances where you don’t want anyone to know that you have a security camera installed. They are ideal to monitor employees in service areas and shops. However, make sure that you duly safeguard the right to privacy of your employees before shopping for these cameras.

  1. Dome Cameras

These are ideal when you want to protect your premises from being vandalized. They are the best security option to fortify your home.

  1. IR Day/Night Cameras

This is the best option when you want to monitor the outdoor areas of your home. These security cameras will capture the footages of possible intruders whether during the day or the night. These surveillance cameras will work well regardless of the weather or lighting conditions.

The Lens

The lens normally collect light for the sensor. It is the lens which control the focus of a surveillance camera. If your security camera has the proper lens, you will be able to see images of a very high resolution. You will be able to recognize either a face or a vehicle’s number plate distinctly.

Most security cameras have zoom lens. These zoom lens can either be digital or optical. A digital zoom lens will only help the sensor to record the first original image. On the other hand, an optical zoom lens will assist the sensor to record additional information other than the first original image. So, you should go for a security camera with an optical zoom lens.

The Sensor

There are two types of sensors which are used in security cameras. These include the CMOS and, the CCD sensors. The CMOS sensors are cheaper and they utilize less power when compared to CCD sensors. However, the CMOS sensors cannot remit a clear image.

You also watch out for the size of the sensor. A larger sensor will absorb more light thus producing an image of a higher quality when compared to a smaller sensor. Most sensors come in two sizes; a quarter inch and a third inch. A quarter inch sensor is 3.2 mm by 2.4 mm, while a third inch sensor is 4.8 mm by 3.6 mm.

So, the best security camera is the one which has a CCD, quarter inch sensor. With this type of sensor, you will be assured of high quality images.

The Resolution

The TVL of a security camera will determine its output. This TVL can be up to 700, but most security cameras range from 380 – 540 TVL.

Although most security experts recommend a 420 TVL as the bare minimum, this is not true. No matter how high the TVL of a camera is, if the sensor and the lens are not of the right type; then the images will not be of a high quality.

Therefore, you should always have the right lens and sensors which you will use to match it with a high TVL. Don’t be fooled with the byline that a high TVL will automatically produce a high quality photo.

In fact, you do not need a high TVL. What you require is just enough TVL, paired with the right lens and sensors. Any TVL beyond the bare minimum is absolutely unnecessary.

The Recording Angle

You should purchase a security camera with a large recording angle. A surveillance camera with a small recording angle will create a blind spot. This blind spot will enable a criminal to get through it unnoticed. So, you should make sure that you have bought a security camera which does not provide for any loophole.

Phone Connectivity Features

Some cameras have features that will enable you to constantly receive notifications on your phone in case of any intrusion. As asserted by Mash Tips, such cameras are the best for safeguarding your premises. So, you should prefer cameras with phone connectivity features to those that have none.

Conclusion

If you consider all these factors, then you will definitely select the best security cameras. What’s more – you will get the greatest value for your money.
