The World Needs to Stop Wasting Food: Here’s How You Can Help

If you are one of those people who wastes food and you want to change your ways, then you are not alone. The first thing that you’ll want to do is make sure that you don’t let guilt take over you, and know that it is more than possible to make a change that could, in a very small way, impact the world. This is especially the case if you run a business, and you want to make it more environmentally friendly, so take a look below to find out more.

Shop Smarter

The first thing that you’ll want to do is shop smart and plan out all of your meals. You’ll want to avoid any impulse buys and go from a grocery list. This way, you are far less likely to buy things that you don’t actually need and therefore, less likely to throw away. You should also make sure that you buy items when you have a plan for using them. Don’t go out and buy potatoes if you have no intentions of using them, even if you have run out. A lot of people buy things because they have “run out” but they don’t think about what they are going to use them for. If you have a lot of food that is good, but is going to waste then consider looking into alternative food waste solutions. Shopping apps are also great for cutting back on waste and you would be surprised at how easy it is for you to try and get the best result out of your shopping.

Buy What You Need

If you go to the shop and you know that you need to buy two carrots for example, then don’t come back with a whole bag because it’s easier or “not that much more”. Buy the exact number that you need to use. The same concept does not apply to spices as these can be used for very long periods of time without you having to worry about a thing. If you want to save here however, then try and buy things like your nuts from the bulk bins that are in supermarkets. Don’t overbuy either and always look at the amount you have realistically. You may think that 5lbs of peanuts is a good idea, but let’s be honest, when are you going to sit down and eat 5lbs of nuts?

Buy Wonky Vegetables

A lot of vegetables are thrown out because of their size. They are also thrown away if they are not uniform or because they don’t look like they should. For the most part, these vegetables are actually perfectly fine to eat. If you want to support this then it’s a good idea for you to go to the farmers market. They usually sell the vegetables that they are unable to sell to the supermarket and it is a great way for you to make sure that you are doing everything you can to make the most out of your purchase while also cutting down on food waste.

So, food waste in this day and age is a huge problem and it is only getting worse. By following the above guidelines, you can easily cut down on your own food waste and all while saving yourself money.
