4 Basic Changes To Improve Communication With Your Employees

Good communication between a boss and their employees is essential to success in business. Your employees need to understand what your business goals are and whether they’re doing their job effectively or not if they’re going to be productive. It’s also important that you’re properly rewarding employees and recognizing their hard work, otherwise, morale is going to take a big hit. If you don’t think that you’ve been that good at communicating with your employees in the past, here are some simple ways to improve that.

Change The Office Layout

If everybody is stuck in cramped cubicles all day long, communication isn’t easy. If people don’t have an open space where they can easily collaborate with one another, it’s difficult to encourage team work. It’s also a problem for you because people are more likely to stay confined to their desks and you won’t see them unless you’re wandering from desk to desk all day long. But if you design your office with communication in mind, it’s a lot easier to keep track of your employees. By opening up the space a bit and creating a more fluid office environment, it’s easier for you to interact with all of your employees on a regular basis.

Face To Face Meetings

Taking the time to meet with your employees and speak to them about how they’re getting on is one of the easiest ways to stay on top of what’s happening in your company. Employee reviews are the best time to do this but a lot of bosses don’t really know how to conduct them properly. It’s also important that you keep the questions consistent every time so you can see where you’ve made improvements and which areas still need work.

Be Approachable


If you’re the kind of person that is prone to getting angry when an employee comes to you with a problem or a query about something, they’re just going to stop doing it. You’ll be unaware of problems in the business until it’s absolutely necessary that you’re involved and then it’s going to be harder to solve those issues. That’s why it’s important that you’re approachable and you have an open door policy so people will come to you right away if they have any problems.

Act On Feedback

Even if you’ve got an open door policy, employees won’t bother to speak to you about things if you just ignore them and don’t take action. For example, if an employee comes to you and tells you that a certain process is slowing them down and it could do with some changes, have a look at that. Don’t just say that’s the process and they’ll have to get used to it. If you’re actually taking notice of people when they communicate with you, they’re a lot more likely to do it.
