Diwali season is here. And so is the season for your annual bonus. We Indians often wait for such seasons to fulfil our ‘cart’ list. This is the season of most discounts and offers. From gold to apparels, electronics to cars, the sales of each industry go sky-high. If you too are thinking of buying a car, then let us tell you, there is no better time to buy one than this. During Diwali, most of the dealers not only offer discounted price but also give free goodies like seat cover, music system etc. to tempt you in purchasing from them. And who doesn’t love goodies?

So, if you too have decided to fill up your garage with a new four-wheeler, then keep the following seven things in mind to make your purchase easier. Here’s the step by step guide for buying your new car this Diwali:

  • Financial Planning

First thing first. Budget! After deciding that you are going to buy a car, decide your budget. You need to calculate how much you can spend on a car. It would depend on your income, your savings, your other loans (if any), and most importantly, your needs.

You need to figure out two things: how much can you afford to give as a down payment and how much of your monthly salary you can sacrifice to pay the EMI. Once you figure these two out, you will have a lump sum figure that you can spend on your new car.

  • To SUV or Not To SUV

Once your budget is finalised, you should decide what type of car you want. At first, keep the budget aside and check your requirement. Check if you need the car just for transportation, or you seek thrill in off-road trips. See if your family can fit in a hatchback or you need a 7-seater SUV. Once you figure out these two things, you can easily choose among hatchback, sedan, MUV, and SUV.

  • The Newer the Better or Old is Gold

Now is the time to mix up your budget and the type of car you need. We didn’t mention the budget in the second point because if your budget is of a sedan while you need an SUV, then it won’t be any fruitful exercise. But once you decide the two separately, you can combine them and see where you are standing.

If you can afford to buy a car as per your requirement, well and good. However, if your bank balance is little under the weather and your requirement is as beautiful as autumn, then you can go for a second-hand car. Just make sure that you take a trusted mechanic with you when you go and check the car out.

  • Diesel or Petrol (Or CNG)

Being an Indian, it matters. Seeing the sky-high fuel pricing, most people are opting for diesel. But they forget one thing: a diesel car needs more maintenance. Don’t blindly go for diesel cars. See your requirement and calculate how much you will be driving in a month.

If you won’t be driving much, say less than 500 km a month, then go with a petrol variant. If your consumption would be between 500 km to 1000 km a month, then go for CNG. But if you are planning to drive more than this, then opt for a diesel car.

  • Ride the Beast (Or the Beauty, in case you are going with VW Cooper)

Now that your budget is fixed, you know the car type, and you know which variant (petrol, diesel or CNG) you will be buying, check the cars of all the companies. For instance, if you have finalised you are going to buy an MUV and your budget is around Rs. 12 lakhs, then test drive Duster, Terrano, Creta, and all the available options in the market.

Test driving will tell you how comfortable the car is, how good the pickup is, and how smooth the drive is. If possible, try it on and off the road, this will allow you to judge better.

  • Look Out for Features

Don’t choose a car solely based on the test drive. Remember, when you will be driving your car on the road, other people will be riding too. So, check out the features of the car as well. See the leg space it has (front and back), the boot space, music system, safety features, wheel type, GPS, etc.

These features are very important since you will be driving the car every day. Don’t ignore them, keep both the test drive and the features it offers in mind when you finalise your new car.

  • Don’t Forget About Insurance

Always go for a comprehensive car insurance because let’s admit it, prevention is better than the cure. We are living in a country where in some cities people drive like there is no tomorrow. So, make sure you get your vehicle insured as soon as you buy it.

In fact, not only your vehicle but you and your family should be covered against untoward events on the road. For this purpose, comprehensive car insurance provides you with personal accident cover as well.

Moreover, a comprehensive car insurance covers all the risks covered in the Motor Vehicles Act plus loss/damage caused to your car due to:

  • Theft
  • Fire
  • Vandalism
  • A civil disturbance (like a riot)
  • Natural disasters (like a flood or a hurricane)
  • Damage done to your car by animals

Last but not least, follow the traffic rules and drive safe! Happy shopping and a happier Diwali.
