Toughing It Out At the Top: The Best Management Tactics

Many people aspire to be the boss one day. It’s a great achievement to reach the summit or set up your own business, but it can be tough at the top. You have to make decisions on a daily basis, and it’s not always easy to manage people. The aim is to get the best out of your team to drive the business forward, but how can you make this happen?

 

Pulling together

Everyone knows that teams work better when all the cogs are turning in the right direction. Managing groups of people can be really difficult, especially if you’ve got strong personalities or people who find it tough to get their voice heard. As an employer, you want your business to be as productive as possible, and getting everyone to pull together is imperative. Organize regular team meetings, let every person speak and share their ideas and try and nip any problems in the bud. If people aren’t getting on, don’t let negative vibes fester, as this can affect the team performance as well as the individuals involved. If you struggle with conflict resolution or mediation, it may be a good idea to consider undertaking training in this area. When you are working as a team, it’s also really important to set clear objectives and goals. Your team should always be aware of the end goal.

Setting the scene

Every employer should consider the working environment carefully. There’s a lot to be said for creating an environment, which is inspiring and motivational, but you also need to focus on health and safety. As the boss, it’s your duty to protect workers and to shield them from accidents and injuries. If your employees suffer from work-related illnesses as a result of their working conditions or they sustain injuries in an accident that could have been prevented by using equipment like self closing gates, you may be liable for compensation. When you run a business, think about your workforce and put yourself in their shoes. Would you want to work in a place where there’s a high risk of injury, the walls are damp, and the carpet is shredded? Would you want to go to work every day if you knew that there were hazards that hadn’t been addressed? Health and safety should always be your priority. There’s no point in buying egg chairs or putting a pool table in the lobby to make the office a bit funkier if people are slipping on wet floors or tripping over hidden steps because the corridor is too dark.

One on one time

It’s great to be able to spend time working on group projects and getting to know your colleagues, but sometimes, there’s nothing more valuable than offering your employees some one on one time. In a group setting, some people find it difficult to speak up, and they may lack confidence when it comes to offering suggestions or feedback. There may also be a feeling of awkwardness if there are issues that an employee would like to discuss that may impact others. In this case, it would be much easier to go through these problems or raise concerns in an individual meeting. One on one sessions also give you the chance to get to know your employees a little better and to gauge how they’re getting on. You can ask them about what they enjoy about the job and perhaps what they don’t enjoy so much, discuss future plans and chat about any concerns that may be potentially holding them back or affecting their level of job satisfaction.

Rewards and respect

You often hear people saying that respect is earned. As the boss, you should never assume that respect is a given. If you want people to look up to you, you’ll have to work for it. If you expect respect, show your employees the same courtesy. If your workforce is working all hours to get a job done and they’re giving you maximum effort, make sure they know that you’re pleased with the level of industry and you’re grateful for the hard work and dedication. It’s so important to give people something to work for. Would you be desperate to do a job to the best of your ability if you never got anything in return? Would you put in extra hours and sacrifice spending time with your friends or family if you didn’t even get a thank you? Rewards are an excellent way of motivating your team and showing your employees that you care. Some companies offer financial incentives, such as bonuses, while others will organize social events or perks like tickets to a sports game or concert. It’s up to you what kind of rewards scheme you set up, but make sure there is always a reason to work hard.

Opportunities

When you employ somebody, progression should be a shared goal. That candidate sitting in front of you probably wants to climb the ladder, and you should share the same ambition. Offer your workforce the chance to gain new skills and develop both personally and professionally. It’s hugely beneficial to recognize talent and give employees a stepping stone to get to the next stage of their career. If you’ve got people working hard and performing consistently, don’t automatically advertise more senior roles externally. Consider giving your own talented individuals a shot. Investing in training and development courses, workshops and sessions will improve your business, as well as enabling individuals to expand their skill set.

If you’re the boss, it’s natural to want to get the best out of every person. You want your business to run like clockwork and your employees to enjoy their time at work. It can be difficult to manage people, especially if you aren’t a natural leader and you’re dealing with people with strong personalities. Try and be approachable, create the right environment and make time for your employees. Don’t expect respect if you can’t give it out or demand maximum effort if there’s no incentive on offer. Motivate your team, try and make time for fun and encourage progression and development.
