Packaging and branding

If you’re selling a product of any type, looks are everything. There’s a lot of competition out there, so you need to make sure that you can catch a consumer’s eye and outshine your rivals. Think very carefully about how you package and brand the product. You want your branding to be relevant to the product, as well as aesthetically pleasing. There’s no point in putting a picture of a dog on a chocolate bar or a tropical beach scene on some pet food, for example. If you’re producing a new blend, do some research into what consumers like and dislike when it comes to coffee packaging. Do they prefer to buy pouches, jars or tins? Are they more keen on some colors than others? Do they like a pun or would they prefer something more serious and sophisticated for a brand name and slogan? The information you obtain from research can be hugely beneficial at both the design and marketing stages. Always consider your target market when you’re coming up with concepts. If you’re aiming a product at a child, it’s probably going to look very different to something that is suitable for the adult market.

Marketing and selling

Once you’ve got a great looking product, it’s all about ensuring that it flies off the shelves. If you intend to meet with buyers, always ensure that you are dressed smartly and that you have all the information you could possibly need to hand. Rehearse your presentation, but don’t behave like a robot. The panel or individual will probably be interested in your story, why you wanted to develop the product and how you got to where you are today. Be confident, and be passionate. If you don’t believe in the product, you can’t expect anybody else to take a chance on it. Hosting a launch is a great way to generate a buzz about your product. Try and network, and invite industry insiders, bloggers, and people from the media. Let people try the product, and give out some branded freebies for them to take home.

Marketing is essential for driving sales, so work on a strategy that will suit the product and your target market. If you’re trying to sell to people aged between 18 and 35, for example, social media marketing is often incredibly effective. People from this demographic have their phones on them all the time, and they like to be connected to the world via social media. Set up some pages, tell people more, and run some competitions to get people talking. Make sure all your pages and accounts are linked and sell your brand at every opportunity.

If you’ve got a product to sell, there’s a lot to think about. Hopefully, this guide will help you design an attractive product and come up with effective plans to help it fly.
