Accidental injuries are always going to be a dangerous and expensive threat for business owners. There is no way to dodge them completely, but there are chances for you to avoid a serious injury that could end up costing your company a fortune in a court case. Our first recommendation is that you make sure your employees are trained. Research has revealed that a large percent of injuries in the workplace could have been avoided if workers had been given more training. There are plenty of courses online that you can arrange which will help your employees deal with the threat of an accident in the workplace. It will ensure that they know what to do if they encounter a hazard that could cause a serious injury. There are a few other pieces of advice that health and safety experts recommend for business owners too.

Never Use Untrained Workers

There will be lots of jobs in your business that could be dangerous or risky if your employees have not been trained. The classic example would be moving heavy equipment and or furniture. If you’re moving this type of product around you should know how to lift heavy objects safely. Otherwise, you could develop a serious back injury. It can even leave you in chronic pain for the rest of your life. Just imagine the payout a worker could receive from court with that type of injury on record. Unfortunately, many business owners are unaware of the legal dangers here. That’s why, to save money, they get their office staff to move furniture around rather than hiring a team. It’s a silly way to get in trouble with the law, certainly, but one that is a lot more common than you think.

Another possibility could be your workers completing a job on the exterior of the building. For instance, they might be putting up marketing materials. Again, it’s best to hire a pro team for this type of job. Rope access might be the safest way to hang the banners. But you should never but an employee in the position where they are completing a job like this if they haven’t been trained.

Always Arrange Inspections

A shocking number of businesses across the country don’t bother to arrange inspections of their work environments. Instead, they simply hope for the best when there could be serious dangers lurking around every corner. For instance, if you don’t get your business checked thoroughly there could be faulty, dangerous equipment. A loose wire in the office kitchen might not seem like a big deal. But it could create a fire that might not be extinguished since your sprinklers aren’t working. After all, why would they? You haven’t had them checked since you bought the office nearly five years ago!

Don’t Overwork Employees

Of course, one of the main causes of an injury in the office isn’t an accident at all. It’s RSI or repetitive strain injury, commonly caused by typing up documents without any breaks. It’s your responsibility to ensure your workers are taking all the breaks they need. If you push them too hard and they are in your office, you will be accountable for any injuries they develop.

Accidental injuries are always going to be a banana skin for business owners. But that doesn’t mean you have to slip on it.
