Community Service: Four Ways Your Business Can Help The Local Community
As a business owner, it can be very easy to get caught up in developing new products, and watching your profit margins. But successful businesses don’t stand alone from the communities that they operate in. In fact, they often rely on the community in more than one way to thrive. That is why it is such a great idea to use your business to give something back to your community. Read on, to find out just how you can do this.
Being environmentally sound
One of the best ways to give something back to the community in which you operate is to ensure that your business is helping and not harming them. In particular it is important to ensure that you are following the guidelines for environmentally sound practice. To ensure that extra strain isn’t placed on the surrounding community residents or environment because of your existence as a business.
Things like water conservation, chemical and waste disposal, and recycling are all relevant here as they can all make a difference, directly to the quality of life of the members of that community. Remember too that if you are doing it by the book, it’s likely that you will not only encourage others to do the same as well but also gain some positive business karma in the process.
Donating some profits
Something else that you can do as a business, for the community that you are situated in, is to donate some of your profits to help a particular charitable organisation.
For example, it might be possible to have a month a year when your give 1% of your total profits to a children’s feeding program. Or to an animal cruelty prevention societies, so they can treat and look after abandoned wild and domestic animals.
Organizing a fundraiser
Another great idea if you are trying to make a difference in the community with you business is to organize a fundraiser with the benefits going to a charity, or cause close to the communities’ heart.
As a business, you can donate food, or items for a prize raffle. Or even get members of the public and your clients to sponsor your workers to do something silly. Like having a fancy dress day or a sponsored eating contest.
However, be careful here, because if the cause that you are raising money for is a somber one, such as helping the families of people involved in an accident. Then it might be more appropriate to come up with some memorial fundraiser ideas that are a bit more respectful and less frivolous in nature.
Donating some time
Lastly, a very easy and very effective way of making a difference to the community in which your business is situated is to donate some time. Usually, in the form of working hours.
To do this get your employees together, but close down the business for the day. Instead, allow them to go out into the community and some good.
Good suggestions for activities they could take part in include litter picking, gardening work in local parks, or even cleaning up particular areas like rivers or wooded areas. With everyone working together it shouldn’t take too long either!
